Brexit: Supreme Court says Parliament must give Article 50 go-ahead

Parliament must vote on whether the government can start the Brexit process, the Supreme Court has ruled.

The judgement means Theresa May cannot begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing - although this is expected to happen in time for the government's 31 March deadline.

But the court ruled the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland assemblies did not need a say.
Brexit Secretary David Davis promised a parliamentary bill "within days".

Sources have told the BBC the bill - to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and get formal exit negotiations with the EU under way - will be introduced this Thursday, with an expectation that it could pass through the House of Commons in a fortnight.

Sunday was worst January day for tornado deaths since 1969

The Southeast took stock Monday of the wide swath of destruction wrought by the deadliest January day for tornadoes in 48 years.

With 16 deaths, Sunday became the USA’s worst January day for tornadoes since Jan. 22, 1969, when 32 people died, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Such violently destructive storms are rare for January, and Sunday’s storm was particularly deadly, killing 15 people in Georgia and one in Florida. It was also the deadliest day overall since April 27, 2014. Four other people died Saturday in another tornado in Mississippi.

January 2017 is now the second-deadliest January for tornadoes in the U.S. since accurate records began in 1950. Only January 1969 had more.

Survey teams were out examining damage Monday to determine how many tornadoes hit Georgia, the length of their path and their strength. The tornadoes and violent storms left dozens injured and destroyed homes, businesses and communities.

President Trump pledged to aid Georgia's recovery.

"I just spoke with Gov. Nathan Deal,” Trump said during a White House ceremony. “Georgia is a great state, great people … The tornadoes were vicious and powerful and strong and they suffered greatly. So we'll be helping out the state of Georgia.”

Trump also expressed condolences for victims of storm damage in surrounding states.

A new mayor promised to fix a Texas city. Instead, he resigned after just 37 days on the job.

Just a little more than a month after taking office, a Texas mayor has announced his resignation on social media following a series of pointed questions about his personal and professional background.

Dan McQueen (Corpus Christi City Council) Dan McQueen (City of Corpus Christi)
Corpus Christi Mayor Dan McQueen said Wednesday on Facebook that he was stepping down.

“Consider this my resignation,” he said in the post, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. “I resign immediately. The city can no longer deal with such differing views and divisiveness. I step down from my position as Mayor, in order to allow the council and city to regain focus on success.

“Sorry, they are now into my ex-wives and kids. Nothing good will come from that mess.”

Although it’s not exactly clear which specific incident led McQueen to his decision, he reportedly had been expressing frustration about the local media’s questions.

The Caller-Times reported that it “came on the heels of questions about his stated educational background, his chief of staff hire and a series of Facebook posts that took aim at fellow council members, city staff and the local media.”

According to the newspaper:

The saga leading up to Wednesday’s announcement began two days prior, with a cryptic Facebook post from McQueen where he bemoaned his first 35 days in office as being filled with attacks from council members, the public and the media. Two sentences from the post related to the remainder of his two-year term.

“I just don’t see the VALUE in this fight for 600 more. I had such HOPE for our city,” McQueen wrote.

The Caller-Times said that McQueen has repeatedly referred to his education in aerospace engineering — a claim that has recently been called into question.

In fact, McQueen, who won a nonpartisan election, was recently asked about it during an interview with ABC affiliate KIII-TV3.

“I have several degrees,” he said. “Do I have a specific degree that says ‘engineer’ on it? No. So does that make me not an engineer? I’ve been an engineer for years. … I am the most educated person on your council.”

Earlier this week, McQueen wrote on Facebook that the city council was “comprised of only High School graduates!” according to the Caller-Times.

“But that is not the Story,” he added, “you should ask WHY? I think the answer is MONEY! Attack the most educated and experienced person on the council, FUNNY!”

Trump sweeps into Washington with a wave and a salute

WASHINGTON — Ready for his big moment, Donald Trump swept into Washington on a military jet Thursday and quickly set to building better ties to the Republican Congress as he kicked off three days of inaugural festivities. Washington braced for an onslaught of crowds and demonstrators — with all the attendant hoopla and hand-wringing.

Trump was quickly taking on more of the trappings of the presidency, giving a salute to the Air Force officer who welcomed him as he stepped off the jet with wife Melania at Joint Base Andrews just outside Washington.

His first stop was a luncheon in a ballroom at his own hotel, where he gave a shout-out to GOP congressional leaders, declaring: “I just want to let the world know we’re doing very well together.” House Speaker Paul Ryan, he said, will finally have someone to sign legislation into law. Then Trump veered into the territory of the unknowable to boast his Cabinet selections had “by far the highest IQ of any Cabinet ever.”

Just blocks away, the White House was quickly emptying out. President Barack Obama’s schedule was clear beyond his daily briefing and his final weekly lunch with Vice President Joe Biden.
